Car Seat Quilt for Baby Asa

Rebecca and I went to the Falling for Handmade craft show in Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday. On Friday night I whipped up a little car seat quilt as a gift for her newborn Asa. I used some of my favorite fabrics in orange, green, aqua, and yellow.

I cut them into 5x5 charm squares

 
I sewed 4 rows of 4 charms together and bordered them with 2 different colored 2.5" strips from a Kona solid jelly roll I had lying around. Next I selected my backing fabric and put my quilt sandwich together.

 

I decided to try straight line quilting which actually worked pretty well with my design and fabric selection. It was so easy working with this size quilt for a change! I chose a nice complementary aqua for both the thread and bobbin. 

In a matter of hours I was finished piecing, quilting, and was ready to put on my binding. I had a bit of extra backing fabric so I cut it into strips and used it for the binding as well which I think ties the two sides together nicely.

 

 

 

 

 

The finishing touch was a hexie label that I embroidered. I really should have drawn what I was going to embroider prior to stitching so I could get the spacing right. The embroidery reads 'for Asa by NMW'.

Shopping and Lunch Show and Tell

The guild will be getting together this Sunday at the Artful Quilter in Burke VA at 12pm (right when they open) for some major fabric shopping (non-guild members in the NOVA area are welcome to join us too)! After our shopping spree we'll be heading to Fairfax Corner for lunch and a little show and tell! (restaurant to be determined) For driving directions please go here.

Oak Grove Silent Auction Quilt - Part 3

The Oak Grove Silent Auction Quilt top is done! I will qualify that statement by also saying that I am considering adding a border in the green and gold maze fabric I used for the sashing and/or another batik that ties all of the colors together but I need to mull that over while I sleep...

Tic Tac Toe On The Go Mats

This weekend I've been working on a little project I saw on Jaybird Quilts called 'Tic Tac Toe on the Go'. It's a quilted play mat made from chalk cloth and you're favorite prints. Julie developed her tutorial as part of Castle Peeps Summer Camp (more projects here). Check it out for all sorts of great projects for kids using Lizzy House Castle Peeps!

I am making these little mats as Christmas gifts for all of the 5 year olds in the family and combining them with some chalk sticks, a cloth to wipe between games, and a bag to carry it all in. I followed the instructions for the most part but I did not worry about fussy cutting the sashing. I am sure it would have looked better but the kids aren't going to care and it seemed like a waste of fabric.

Despite not fussy cutting the sashing, I think the first two I made turned out great! I combined Castle Heraldry Royal Blue, Castle Town Royal Blue, and Castle Flags Yellow from fabricworm.com for two of the mats and am planning to make more using the same patterns in red as the main color and blue as the binding.

I don't actually have any chalk yet but as soon as I get some I will show you some action shots!
